Letter to God and Other Poems

Nsibidi Africana Publishers 2003

Paperback, 90 pages.

ISBN 978-0-972-224-178

Letter to God & Other Poems is Nnorom Azuonye's "portrait of the artist as a young man", a poetic autobiography in which he recreates the vicarious experiences of life and letters which have combined to shape his artistic vision. Philosophical and paradoxically as introspective and they are vociferous, these lyrical pieces which often blossom into compact narratives, are all rooted in the basic question of the meaning of life on earth as posed in the title poem, "Letter to God". But beyond such brooding philosophical concerns, the poems are a celebration of life at various phenomenological levels, wherein the poet pays tribute to friends and family and reflects on the value of relationships which not only bind but also divide humanity in many perplexing ways.

Some poems in this book previously appeared in Sunday Statesman, Agenda, Africa Resource, and Voices Against Racism: 100 Poems Against Racism.

"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat."

- Theodore Roosevelt
